Buying a new or used motor home, 5Th wheel, travel trailer, or folding camper is always exciting as we anticipate places we will visit and the new friends we will meet in our new RV or camper… It is exciting and it should be as the RV industry is indeed “alive and well”, sales continue to be strong, and the future looks bright as well. RV’ing is a tremendous form of recreation and is a great way for families to get away together.

As an ,RV technician, have a unique perspective see these buyers six months to a year later when the euphoria of the buying process is long past and the reality has set in. By this time RV owners have a much better understanding of what they bought, mistakes which were made in the buying process, and the things they would do differently if they ever have the opportunity again.

Here are some of the major mistakes have encountered passing them on to interested RV’ers to help you avoid and some of the most common pitfalls motor home, fifth wheel, and travel trailer buyer’s encounter.

Buying the wrong RV heads up the list and explains why there are so many late model RV’s on the market. When it comes to supply and demand there is no shortage of used RV’s on the market. So why do people buy wrong? The answer is simple. The glitz and glamour of RV dealer showrooms and lots can easily sidetrack unsuspecting buyers away from their true needs when they see RV’s which look better than their own homes. In short, “emotion overtakes logic” leading some to buy the wrong RV, usually one which is too large for ones true needs.

Another pitfall is going through the selection and buying process too quickly. Buying an RV is a major expenditure so taking ones time is only prudent both with the decision of RV type and size but also of delivery. Those who “think” they need their RV tomorrow and coerce their dealer into delivering it too quickly as making a big mistake which will result in “down time”(time in which your RV will not be available to you for your use) in the future. If you need it tomorrow it only means you did not begin your search process soon enough.

Another major pitfall is buyers conducting a “poor” inspection of their RV. It does not matter if you are buying a new or used RV for sale, an “in depth” inspection is crucial. After all even if you’re buying new do you want an RV assembled on a Monday morning or Friday afternoon? Trust me, you do not, and an in depth inspection will reveal both poor design and any lack of attention to detail in the final assembly process.

Last but certainly not least is the fallacy of placing too much stock in RV manufacturer’s warranties. they’re not important because they are, but believe it or not , in some cases three years is not enough time to make some of the necessary repairs on some RV’s. The truth of the matter is your new RV should not have to go back to the dealer more than twice in the first year to eighteen months. The reality is people get “worn down” dragging their RV back to the dealership repeatedly while also loosing the right to use their RV as it sits on the RV dealer’s lot. An in depth inspection and slowing down the buying process can alleviate much of these types of problems. continue to be amazed at the number of people who buy RV’s with things that simply are not working. Sometimes its naiveté as many assume too much. My advice is when buying an RV NEVER ASSUME ANYTHING!

One last word about buying used. Some of the best deals out there are used RV’s (the seller eats the depreciation, not you) and an in depth inspection goes a long way in reducing ones risk when buying used. You just have to know how to do it. If you feel you are not knowledgeable or experienced enough to be able to do this let me assure you there is a lot of good information available to help you. I encourage you to seek it out and do your homework because it is time and effort, which most assuredly will pay off. That is my wish for you that all of us will be “happy campers”.

Don’t plan your next RV excursion or make a new RV purchase without a review of the following 5 simple considerations:

1. Consider the interests and needs of all family and friends - This will help eliminate many of the issues that can come up during the trip. Just about every experienced RV traveler (and most rental companies) urge the first-time renter to have a planning meeting with family and friends before attempting to rent an RV. Just an hour or two some evening or on a weekend well before going to the rental company or RV dealer will be time well spent. Encourage family members, including children, to write down what they would like to have in an RV that will be their vacation home. Make a list from these suggestions and ideas and take the list with you when you talk with the RV company.

2. Ask a lot of questions - This is great advice in every purchasing situation. The bottom line is this: a lot of information is better than too little information when it comes to spending money. When you are selecting a travel vehicle that will be your home for a week or two, you need to clear up any doubts about up-front costs, hidden costs, features of the RV, how to perform the basic set up and so on. Most experienced RV travelers will emphasize that reputable RV dealers and rental companies will be happy to answer any and all questions you have. Your contact with the company should allow all the time necessary to make sure you are comfortable with your rental before you drive away.

3. Know where you’re heading and how long you will stay - This is important for several reasons. The most basic of these: you must make sure that the campgrounds and RV parks you plan to use have the facilities you need for your vehicle and for the members of your group. It may be best not to rely just on the brochures and Web sites for the parks and campgrounds. A phone call to ask two or three basic questions about facilities and activities may uncover some hidden problem or some lack of amenities that can change your plans. Tip: Confirm your reservations!!!

4. Understand the differences in recreational vehicles - Have a working knowledge of the basics of RV rentals. There are several different types of RV, including, campers that pull behind your car or truck or, if you decide to take your own vehicle, a towed camping trailer or “pop-up” camper. Your vehicle must be suitable for pulling a camper and you will need a safe, strong hitch (in addition to a stable wiring harness). There are three basic classes of RV: A, B, and C. These types are differentiated by size, the amount of interior room in each, and the different amenities offered. A few minutes of study should point you toward the type of RV that will best fit your family ’s travel vacation needs.

5. Include alternative transportation in your vacation/RV plans - Unless you are pulling a smaller camping trailer that you can disconnect from your car you may need to plan for another way of getting around when you finally arrive at your destination. While it may be possible to get along without another vehicle when you are driving a larger motorhome, experienced RV travelers routinely tow a small car, bring along a small motorized scooter or two, or even pack a couple of good bicycles. Enjoyment of your vacation can truly depend on how you handle the transportation needs that arise once you arrive at a final campground or RV park.

Any home will have a few niggles like a squeaky door, occasional problems with the aircon or heating and so on. In other words, not perfect but pretty damn close. It will be the same with your motorhome, your dream RV. There are some pretty simple things that you can look for when buying your used RV that can get you close to the ideal (and save money). Soft Spots

Check the flooring thoroughly for any soft spots. You are most likely to find these in the kitchen area and bathroom. If there is rotting of the flooring it probably indicates a long term water leak, as likely as not from the plumbing. To get the floor fixed and the leaks traced and fixed could be expensive.

Engine

Your dream RV will be doing a whole lotta miles - find out all you can about the engine history. Ask for the maintenance records, repair receipts and so on. Listen to the engine running with the hood up, see how it sounds, are there any strange rattles or other noises that should not be there? Did it start easily from cold. Is the exhaust at all smoky, especially when revved? Is it quiet inside the cab. Having someone with some engine know-how would be useful if you don’t have much mechanical experience.

Open and Shut

Open and close everything inside and outside of the recreational vehicle you are interested in. Poke around and look for signs of water leakage in cupboards, around the toilet and so on. Do all of the RV doors and cupboard doors open and close properly (include the water, gas etc flaps as well)? Does everything switch on and off correctly?

Propane system

You may want to hire a specialist for these checks as they could make the difference between life and death. Look at the regulator and the propane lines, do they look in good condition or are they past there best? Is the tank storage area showing any signs of corrosion?

Warranties

Check with the RV dealer to find out what parts, if any are under warranty still and also that the warranty cards are still available.

There are of course many more checks that you could and need to do before satisfying yourself that this is a good used recreational vehicle to buy.
